John F. Kennedy International Airport is the largest of the three principal airports serving New York City and last year more than 47 million passengers passed through its gates confirming it as the top international airport in the USA. JFK airport is located in Queens County to the south east of the centre of New York City, approximately 12 miles from Lower Manhattan island.
Together with LaGuardia and Newark airport, JFK airport is controlled by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and is the operational base for JetBlue Airwaysand the main port of call for Delta Air Lines and for American Airlines. In total,more than90 airlines regard JFK airport as their home.
The most important international routefrom JFK Airport is the JFK – London Heathrow route with other important destinations being JFK – Paris, JFK – Frankfurt and JFK – Tokyo. More than 100 international carriers fly into JFK Airport including British Airways.
Approximately 36,000 people are employed by the Port Authority at JFK Airport which contributes over $30 billion annually to the US economy.
Terminal 5 at JFK Airport was originally called the TWA Flight Center and it opened in 1962. The terminal is one of the most striking airport termini in the world and following the termination of TWA it became vacant. The Port Authority in conjunction with JetBlue Airlines remodelled the terminal internally and in the process created 26 new gates. The refurbished terminal is now called T5 and it reopened in 2008. In 2009, it is expected to welcome more than 20 million passengers. In total, JFK airport has 8 terminals with Terminal 8 opended in 2007.
