Located in Queens County on Long Island, LaGuardia Airport is situated near the waterfront in an area called Flushing Bay. It is called LaGuardia Airport after a former mayor of New York City who commissioned the construction of the airport. LaGuardia is controlled by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and is the smallest of the three major airports that serve New York City.
LaGuardia Airport is smaller than Newark and JFK but it is able to accommodate the world’s largest aircraft. Much of the traffic in and out of
LaGuardia Airport is for airports within the USA and Canada but it does have full customs and immigration processing departments for international flights, with new facilities opening in 2009.
LaGuardia Airport normally handles more than 20 million passengers whereas Newark Airport handled 35 million and JFK Airport over 50 million. Combined, the three airports that serve New York City and the surrounding districts handle 100 + million passengers per year making the three airports the busiest airport system in the USA.
LaGuardia Airport has a Central Terminal Building that handles most of the domestic flights that come into the airport. The terminal is as long as six blocks and comprises a four-storey section in the centre and two wings, each with three storeys. Within the Central Terminal Building there are 38 gates.
