The full name for Newark Airport is Newark Liberty International Airport and it lies within the city limits of both Elizabeth and Newark, in the State of New Jersey, USA. Situated about 15 miles from the heart of the centre of New York City, Newark Airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which is the same authority that operates J.F.K. International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.
There are three other smaller airports in the area of Newark Airport and they are:
- Stewart International Airport;
- Teterboro Airport; and
- Downtown Manhattan Heliport.
In the top ten of busy airports in the USA, Newark Airport is the fifth busiest of the international airports in the USA and is the operational centre for Continental Airlines 
which operates from terminals A and C.
Apart from Continental Airlines, the second largest operator centred at Newark Airport is Federal Express, the international airfreight courier which occupies more than 700,000 square metres of space within the airport boundary.
In the last reporting year of 2008, Newark Airport served nearly 35 million passengers contributing to a total of 107 million passengers that went through New York’s three airports.
In the New York area the principal airports handled the following numbers of passengers:
- LaGuardia Airport 23.1M
- Newark Airport 35.4M; and
- JFK International Airport 47.8M.
In terms of total numbers of passengers, the airport system that serves New York City handles more passengers than any other airport system within the United States of America and is only second in the world to London, which is served by four major international airports.
