Guide To Central Park, New York City

Central Park, New York City

Central Park in Manhattan holds the distinction of being named as the first Scenic Landmark of New York City. The park underwent a lengthy restoration when a group of zealous New York city dwellers along with entrepreneurs and leading corporations came together for a conversancy program called ‘The Wonder of New York campaign.’ They have, over the years, collectively invested more than $450 million in Central Park and it is today a working model for urban parks across the globe.

Spread across 843 acres, the specialty of Central Park is that the whole area is man-made, even though it is designed to look as natural as possible. The park is replete with plenty of green, walking tracks, lakes, ponds, a swimming pool (which turns into an ice rink during winter) and plenty of natural forested area. The Delacorte Theatre is located outdoors and plays host to several important events, like the ‘Shakespeare in the ParkSummer in Central Parkfestival.

Pedicabs and carriage drawn cabs help park visitors to view the entire park area. Even though the carriage drawn cabs take a much longer time to tour the Park, a largepercentage of park visitors still prefer this ride for its romantic charm. The 6 mile long Park Drive is a favourite among joggers and bicyclists. Regular park races are conducted by the New York Road Runners and the last leg of the annual New York marathon also ends here.

Central Park is also the preferred venue for many landmark events in New York’s busy social calendar including the New York Philharmonic orchestra and the Summerstage. The ‘Tavern on the Green’ is a famous New York City restaurant that is located in Central Park.
