NYC - Manhattan guide for tourists
Manhattan is one of the most famous districts in the United States of America and probably the most expensive area of real estate in the world. Manhattan is principally situated on Manhattan Island near the mouth of the Hudson River and is one of five boroughs that make up New York City.
Manhattan is one of the most densely populated areas in America and apart from Central Park and a few other smaller parks is almost entirely built upon. The grid road system that so typifies Manhattan originates from the north of England; although it fell out of favour in the UK it was embraced 100% by the architects who planned construction on the island which covers about 22 square miles.
Manhattan Island is not the sole island that makes up the city of New York as it is complemented by several smaller islands which are:
- Roosevelt Island;
- Ward’s Island;
- Randall’s Island;
- Liberty Island;
- Governor’s Island;
- U Thant Island; and
- Ellis Island.
Manhattan is world famous for its streets; when people talk about ‘Broadway’ everyone knows that the person is referring to New York’s leading theatre district and home of ticker-tape parades. If another person mentions Wall Street, everyone knows that the person is referring to New York’s financial district. Manhattan is also home to most of America’s leading radio, TV and telecommunications companies as well as being the host city for organisations in the magazine, newspaper and book publishing industries.
Restaurants, art galleries and museums are also major features in the Manhattan landscape but the most famous international building has to be the headquarters of the United Nations. Of course, the World Trade Center in Manhattan with its twin towers was the most iconic representation of New York, until September 2001, and was second only to the Statue of Liberty.
