Guide to Time Square in NYC

Time Square NYC guide - Theatre, TKTS, Bubba Shrimp & Toys R Us

One of the most famous metropolitan squares in the world, Times Square is in Midtown Manhattan and lies at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Originally called Longacre Square, it was renamed Times Square after the Times Building that was occupied by the New York Times newspaper in the early years of the 20th century.

Today, Times Square is an iconic symbol of New York City and is especially famed for its neon and animated billboards. Times Square is a popular venue for New Year’s Eve celebrations when more than a million people enter Times Square to celebrate a crystalball bedecked with lights being lowered down a pole on the Times building to reach the bottom at exactly the beginning of the New Year. A more eco-friendly ball has been designed and was used for the last couple of years.

Buildings in Times Square are forced by law to display illuminated signs and the brilliance of the displays is spectacular. In fact, officially the Broadway in the afternoonsigns are referred to as "spectaculars".

Many important organisations have their HQs in Times Square most notably ABC the TV network which broadcasts Good Morning America from the square. Other organisations with offices in Times Square include Toys R Us and Virgin Records.
